It was during the 19th century that the machinery ancestors of the forklift was initially made. At this time, battery-powered, small models were made for the purpose of moving traveler's baggage at the Altoona train station in Pennsylvania. During the First World War, some different kinds were developed in England specifically for use in the material handling business. These machinery evolved as a solution to the lack of manpower at that time.
The modern equivalents come in a range of configurations and sizes. There are the big truck-mounted forklift models that are also referred to as sod loaders and then the opposite end of the spectrum has small hand truck models. There are also a line of automated versions known as forklift automated guided vehicles which are basically robotic in nature. These units were developed as a means of lowering operational costs and to improve productivity.
Attachments have been made to fit onto lots of regular forklifts, giving them the capability of performing a wider selection of jobs. The motors can be internal combustion or IC models, running on propane, diesel or gasoline, or there are battery operated options which require regular charging. Typical warehouse models will normally be rated to lift between around 1 and 5 tons.
The primary benefit of electric forklifts is fuel expenses. As opposed to internal combustion or IC units, these have less costs per hour. Among the main drawbacks to the electric forklifts is their higher initial cost. Brand new electric forklifts could vary from 20% to 40% more compared to IC units which are rated the same.
Electric forklifts however, offer many advantages like quiet operations, which can be a huge plus for indoor environments. Moreover, no requirement for fuel storage mean no room needs to be allotted for tanks of fuels that are both flammable and dangerous. Since electric forklifts have less components that move compared to internal combustion units, and they are usually used inside and within cleaner environments, they tend to have a longer lifespan overall.
The battery downtime is the biggest disadvantage of an electric forklift. These models function with heavy, large, lead-acid batteries, like the ones found inside your car. These batteries are very powerful and very big. Normally, batteries offer enough power for one standard 8-hour shift, and this translates into 5 or 6 hours of continuous utilization.
